Things to Know About Hair Transplant

Hair loss is a serious problem that starts at an early age today. Hair loss is a problem often seen in men in their twenties, but it can also occur in some women as well. Hair loss, which is accompanied by thinning and regression of the anterior hairline, may occur due to genetic factors in men, hormonal factors in women, and a number of diseases in both genders. The first step for people who are experiencing hair loss is to undergo a health screening to determine if there is a health problem causing it. In the case of health problems such as vitamin and mineral deficiencies, as well as hormonal imbalances that may cause hair loss, treatment should be sought first. If the hair sheds again after receiving the necessary treatments, then hair transplantation may be necessary.

How does a hair transplant work?

The number of grafts is one of the most important considerations before hair transplantation. After the patient is examined by the doctor, the number of grafts needed is determined. Before the hair transplant operation, blood tests are carried out to check for important diseases such as HIV, diabetes, and hepatitis. It is very important to learn whether the patient has a disease that will prevent or pose a risk for hair transplantation, in order to have a successful operation.

Preparation for Hair Transplant

Hair transplant surgeon gives the patient some specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications. Before the operation, the doctor informs the patient in detail about the procedures to be applied, and then the hairline is determined. The hairline is a personal anatomical line. It is determined according to the natural hair border from the area where the forehead texture ends and the hair texture begins. The most important point in hair transplantation is to pay attention to the forehead muscle.

Hair Transplant Procedure

A hair transplant surgeon takes grafts, or small pieces of skin, from areas of the body that contain healthy hair. We call this area the donor site. It’s usually on your head, at the back of your scalp where hair tends to be thickest. Hair transplant specialists place grafts on hairless spots of the scalp. After hair transplantation, a special bandage is applied to the head. The person is discharged after 1-2 hours. After the transplanted skin heals, it should continue to grow hair.

Hair Transplantation with FUE Method

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is an innovative application technique in hair transplantation widely used today. In this technique, a micro-motor with thin tips is used, so that no traces remain on the nape or on the place where the hair follicles were removed. Local anesthesia is applied before hair transplantation, so the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure.

As the second stage of FUE hair transplant, the doctor opens microholes in the area where the hair transplantation will be performed with the use of steel-tipped pens, in the number determined and at an angle to correspond to the natural growth direction of the hair. These invisible holes heal a few days after transplant. Sapphire pens, which have been developed in recent years, are used in the application of the FUE technique. Although it's called "Sapphire FUE" in the industry as if it were another technique, the application method is actually the same as FUE. However, the micro holes in the area where the hair transplantation will be performed are not opened with steel as in the FUE method, but with a sapphire pen. Sapphire tips enable the opening of micro-channels much smaller, smoother, and denser than steel in the area where the transplanting will be made. Micro-opening of the channels minimizes tissue deformation and reduces crusting.

What Happens After A Hair Transplant?

After the FUE hair transplantation application, there is a very slight swelling and redness in the transplantation area, but it disappears in a few days. Medications prescribed by the doctor help recovery. For a week, tiny crusts the size of a pinhead appear in the planting area. Despite this, the person is still able to return to work and social life. It is important not to enter the sea, pool, and solarium for only two weeks, to avoid direct sunlight, and to avoid heavy exercise.

At the end of about a month, the newly transplanted hair begins to fall out. In the second and third months of this process, new hair grows and fills in the old hairless areas. Towards the end of the sixth month, the transplanted area begins to regain its old hairy appearance. After completing the adaptation and development of the hair, it gains its most natural appearance in one or two years, depending on its physical characteristics.
