Bariatric Surgery Procedures

As a consequence of an excessive increase in the ratio of body fat mass to lean mass, obesity is the excessive increase in weight relative to height. Obesity, which is a disease of the modern era, can affect the quality of life of people on its own, as well as the problems it causes, which can shorten one's life. Additionally, obesity is a health issue that can lead to diseases such as sleep apnea, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes are the first methods that should be applied in treating obesity. Physicians recommend obesity surgery when other treatments have not worked.

What does a Gastric Bypass do?

With a gastric bypass, a large portion of the stomach is bypassed and the remaining stomach is sutured to a small intestine.

A gastric bypass surgery aims to reduce the volume of the stomach, as in other obesity surgery operations, as well as eliminate some of the consumed food without it being absorbed by disabling part of the intestines. Thus, patients consume less food, and a portion of it is absorbed.

Gastric Sleeve

One of the most common methods of obesity surgery is the gastric sleeve. This method involves removing 80-90% of the stomach and turning it into a tube. As a result, calorie intake is reduced. Gastric Sleeve surgery is also performed with the laparoscopic surgery method in a period of one to two hours. A two- to three-day hospital stay is required. After two weeks of consuming liquids and soft foods, patients can switch to normal food. Vitamin supplements may be required. This type of surgery removes the fundus region of the stomach and prevents the release of the hormone Ghrelin, which reduces appetite.

It is possible for people to lose 80 percent of their excess weight within a year after this operation. Following the operation, it is important to chew the food thoroughly and consume small portions. In addition, exercise should not be neglected.

What is Intragastric Balloon?

The simplest method that helps to lose weight is the application of gastric balloons. In this method, a balloon filled with liquid or air is placed in the stomach with the help of an endoscope under mild anesthesia. But this balloon can remain in the body for 6 months, a maximum of 1 year, and it is removed again endoscopically within 5-6 minutes. Although it is the advantage of the method that it is simple to apply and there is no permanent change in the body, if the patient does not change his lifestyle after the balloon is removed and does not continue his diet, the lost weight can be regained.

Today, the gastric balloon method is used as a preparation for basic morbid obesity surgery either in patients who are too risky to undergo surgery or in super obese people. It can also be used by those who are not overweight.
